raf-simons-menswearRaf Simons‘ latest menswear collection shown at Pitti Immagine Uomo pays homage to one of the greats of modern American photography, Robert Mapplethorpe. Known for his striking black-and-white self-portraits and nudes, his extraordinary work is the centerpiece of Simons’ Spring/Summer 2017 collection. In collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Raf Simons‘ used Mapplethorpe’s compositions in every single ensemble in his latest menswear range. raf-simons-menswear15“I wanted to approach it like a museum show, or a gallery show. Which has been done very often when it comes to Mapplethorpe’s work,” said Simons, after his show. “Cindy Sherman did it, David Hockney did it. But always in a gallery. I am a fashion designer. I thought the biggest challenge would be to do it in my own environment.”
