Unfortunately, we all face uncomfortable and awkward moments throughout life. It’s up to us whether those moments knock us down, or we’re able to turn it around and conquer it. It’s inevitable that your going to have to step outside your comfort zone once in a while and face the ‘risks’ life throws at you, unless you live under a rock. It all starts with being secure in your own skin. I tend to become comfortable with the familiar, so being introduced to something new at first can be a bit nerve-racking. There are several moments within my professional career that have put me in rather awkward situations. For the longest I absolutely despised the idea of having to speaking in front of people. I would find myself in board meetings holding back from taking part in the discussions, because I was nervous to voice my opinion. Second guessing myself got me no where, in fact, it made the situation worse. What I’ve learned through life’s lessons and growing older is that something can only be awkward if you let it. It’s important to push the boundaries of your comfort zone, and when you do, you might be pleasantly surprised at the results.

For me, getting over my fear of speaking in front of people took some time, but it was something I knew had to be done. I was sick and tired of watching my incompetent co-workers get their way while I sat back and said nothing. I’m not sure exactly what happen, but one day it clicked and I realized that in order for me to get what I want I had to speak up. I was chosen to be in the meeting for a reason, and my anxiety of having to speak in front of people was no longer going to have any effect of my performance at work. Within a few weeks, I noticed a major difference at work and felt more confident with my abilities. My fears of public speaking are long gone in the past, and I now welcome the idea having to do it.
