On July 23rd the music world was shocked when the news broke that Grammy-winning British retro-soul singer Amy Winehouse, was found dead at her home in the Camden section of London. Throughout Winehouse‘s career, her musical achievements were often overshadowed by her troubled personal life. With only a few dozen recorded tracks to her name, Amy Winehouse was already an icon. Known for being a badass little Jewish girl with a massive beehive and tattoos, Amy had an undeniable power in her voice similar to past greats like Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin. Amy Winehouse had years of well-documented drug and alcohol problems and was only 27 years old when she passed away. Winehouse was the first British female to win five Grammys, and her last album was the third biggest seller of the 2000’s in the United Kingdom. Check out some of our favorite performances by Amy Winehouse, as we remember the iconic singer.
