The philanthropic side of MAC Cosmetics, the MAC AIDS Fund, discovered over the past year the power Lady Gaga has on social media. Gaga, was chosen last year to be the official spokesperson for the foundation which started in 1994. The fund was originally created by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo, and gives money to direct service organizations in large American urban areas that offer support to people living with HIV and AIDS. Proceeds from the sale of signature lipsticks and lip glosses go to the MAC AIDS Fund. “The brand was built on strong events, PR, and freestanding store networks,” explains John Demsey, president of Estee Lauder and chairman of the MAC AIDS Fund. With over 20 million Facebook fans and eight million-plus Twitter followers, Lady Gaga’s social media presence raised $34 million for the foundation. The amount raised this past year is equal to the amount that the MAC AIDS Fund raised in total during its first 10 years. MAC Cosmetics hopes to continue working with Lady Gaga for their upcoming campaigns and released a statement saying, “She took the campaign to a whole other level.” Either way it goes it will be interesting to see who they select for their upcoming campaigns.
