Damien Hirst has become widely recognized as one of the most influential artists of our generation. He explores the complex relationship between art, life and death through various forms of artwork including installations, sculpture, painting and drawings. In 2008, Hirst created a series of one hundred and fifty paintings, each titled after an Old Testament psalm. Using butterfly wings and household gloss paint on canvas as his artistic medium, the iridescent butterfly wings combine to form kaleidoscopic patterns reminiscent of Gothic stained glass. Titled The Complete Psalm Paintings, Hirst latest publication provides a striking comprehensive survey of the series. Each of the paintings is accompanied by the psalm from which its title derives, the biblical text rendered on images of individually selected color marble samples.
